Week 5: Student Lounge

There are many media representations of suburbia in the 1950s. Can you draw parallels between the concepts expressed in this week’s readings and movies such as Edward Scissorhands, Pleasantville, and most recently The Stepford Wives? Are there other TV programs or films that come to mind?

In the 50's, the notion of a perfect suburban life was personified by shows like "Father Knows Best" (the name alone is disturbing in this day and age), and "Ozzie and Harriet." These shows implied that everything was rosy and grand in this suburban lifestyle, and many Americans bought into this idea, even if it was far from reality for most. This helped perpetuate the the idea of "what, me worry?" that existed during this time. These depictions on TV and the seeming ambivilance overall may have made people think that life was perfect, and if it isn't happening to me, then it must not be a problem. As noted by the Levittown article, there were plusses and minuses for this time and lifestyle, and the disconnect between perception and reality was often problematic.

Levittown! I remember in "Edward Scissorhands" at one point the camera pans the entire neighborhood, and all the houses looked the same! Just as described in the Levittown homes.

If we are talking about TV shows that represent suburbia areas, only one show I feel truly shows life back in 1960s (even though I didn't live back then) - WONDER YEARS. Here, it really showed the difference in each neighbor, unlike Edward Scissorhands or Pleasantville, where everything was the same and nothing unique. Each family was different, as we watched Kevin live his life and grow up with the same questions we all had as kids.

Definitely Edward Scissorhands had the Levittown concept. Every house was the same and even the shrubbery and trees were like those found in Levittown. I think Pleasentville was similar, but had a slightly less 'planned' look to it. That representation had more of a small town feel than a planned community feel to me. I dont think you have to go back to the 50s to find places similar to Levittown, they exist today all over the country. Whenever I fly into a new city I love to look at the different communities because its almost like artwork how homogenized and perfectly planned they are into lines of houses.
Was back to the future set in the 1950s or 40s, I can't remember exactly?

In Edward Scissorhands all the houses were like the cookie cutter houses. In my old neighborhood, all the houses are the same. There are only two different floor plans and everyother house had that floor plan. It was one style and the other was just flipped to the opposite side. In the movie, the neighborhood only became different when he was doing the landscaping and made unique figures like dinosaurs and such. All of the movies mentioned had the same houses and only changed when something big happened and people started changing their whole life around. I wonder if it is a symbol of how the 50's were and then the change would be the civil rights movement and now with the different houses and neighborhoods. It is an interesting thought I think.

Another show that could draw parallels is full house. No they do not show cookie cutter houses but the townhouses/rowhouses depending on where you grew up are all the same. The block becomes the community. City blocks are uniformly set up. The townhomes/rowhomes are uniformly laided out and even mimic levittown in that all the pipes in the house are on a single pipe chase. There are also a multitude of upgrades and accessories that can be made to that particular style of home.

Do we have to own a "different" house to be happy?

For many, a car is transportation only -- point A to point B, end of story. Others like to customize and turn wrenches.

What about houses? I guess a house will always be a "home" before it is a "building for living, i.e. a house". The personal connections between family members and houses seem to be much stronger than those between people and other objects.

I think back to the future was set in the late 50's or early 60's.

There are many television shows that come to mind when thinking about the 1950's and surburban life. My three sons, denise the menece, the Patty duke show etc. i remember watching these shows on nick at nite in my younger years. in all of the movies and shows it depicted a perfect life, will we know that that was far from the truth but maybe there was a different meaning to these shows. remember the US was just finishing up a world war in teh mid 40's and the Korean War at the beginning of the 50's. maybe this perfect lifestlye in the televisions shows at the time was to portray a strong country.

I don't think the row/town houses shown in Full House were created by Levittown's. I think if anything it was the other way around. The row house design where every house is like the other existed in the cities before the 1950's. Check out any old neighborhood in Baltimore and this is obvious.

I didn't really see the movie Pleasantville but from previews it is similar to Edward Scissorhands, The Stepford Wives in representing this perfect world...As for Ozzie and Harriet, I never heard of that show until I read “Make Room for TV” and this show fits the same category. I think the Cosby show did a little of the same thing...the houses in the neighborhood looked just the same.... and there seem to never be an issue with crime (or anything) in the neighborhood.

What about "who's the boss"? That was one of my favorite TV Shows. It's "old school"

Failure, then, failure! so the world stamps us at every turn. We strew it with our blunders, our misdeeds, our lost opportunities, with all the memorials of our inadequacy to our vocation. And with what a damning emphasis does it then blot us out! by online poker
